Oporornis warber?-Update

Yesterday morning, I spotted a very cool warbler in Kenny Park. He was singing his head off in grapevines and box-elders only 20 feet or so off the ground. This evening, Megan and I saw him again, and I managed to capture some video of his sound. I have no idea if this was the same bird as yesterday, but my hunch is that it is, since he was in the same spot. My field observations were fairly simple: Gray head, white eyering, olive wings, yellow underbelly. No black lines or striping to be seen. Here is the video.

Thanks to Jim McCormac, this bird has now been identified as a Kentucky Warbler.

New Yorkers Are Not Rude

If you're not from New York then you surely know that the city has a reputation for a certain amount of rudeness. It's really not true. New Yorkers aren't any ruder than anyone else or from any other city. Yes, we do everything a lot faster and have less patience for slowness than elsewhere in the world. However, I think we just don't want to be bothered by anyone handing us flyers or begging for money or asking directions or any other sort of random nonsense and that comes off as rudeness. But most New Yorkers are actually very helpful if they aren't rushing off somewhere. Though that's actually rather rare that we're not rushing from one place to another. We do have helpful opinions and ideas about everything and anything and are usually not afraid to share a good tip on a restaurant or a quick way to get somewhere.

One thing we New Yorkers do love is to point out other people's rudeness. So we're used to seeing great signs like the one taped to the information desk/book pick up counter downstairs in the basement at The Strand Book Store telling us exactly how not to be rude. There are a lot of books behind the counter awaiting pickup and I can just imagine it can get pretty frustrating when people come up to the desk all day long and point a finger in the general direction of the massive wall of books and say "I have those books right THERE on hold."

All that being said, The Strand has a really great system for ordering books. You just call and place your order and they find it in the 18 trillion miles of books (and growing) and wrap a rubber band around the books and place them behind the counter awaiting your eventual pickup. It's super efficient, just don't be rude and point your finger.

Howdee all,

Ballie Loves to go for walks when the weather is warm...and the past two days in NC have been nice and toasty. Isn't he a cutie? I only let Ballie out on a leash...so he takes me for a walk...I can sometimes coax him to follow me...but for the most part he is the leader...and when he wants to stop...we stop.
He loves to listen and look.

and that makes me stop and listen...and look...
which is nice...

Many days here in NC I wear PJ's all day...Love to work in the garden in PJ's...and no they are not sexy PJ's....just wonderful flannels.
I also love to walk around in my plastic shoes.....i can wear them with my socks and my slippers on...note the slippers with the little jewel...tee hee..

So I leave you with a Birdie video below...Dellare wanted me to take a bluebird video...because I told her the bluebirds are all over the house and front garden in the morning...but alas I haven't seen them today...so this is going to have to do for now...

10 aid workers have made their first contact by mobile phone text messages to family and friends. They have spoken at length about their ordeal onboard "Strofades IV" Greek-owned ship, registered in Malta.

The 10 aid workers are out of physical danger, sitting together in one small cabin in the lower-deck's crew quarters of the ship. They want to reassure everyone they are OK:

There are 7 (more than previously reported) Libyans on the ship as well. The Libyans include customs inspectors, border police and the harbour manager for Derna Port. The Libyans are being treated better than the aid workers, seem to have separate cabins, have more freedom of movement and are in contact with Libyan authorities by radio and mobile phone.

Kieran Turner says: "At one point we managed to get hold of a ship's radio, and got through to a nearby tanker - OCL Oakland. Through the tanker we sent out distress messages, requesting help, and these got passed onto two alleged Nato warships in the area P492 and F452."

Ken O'Keefe added: "They said they would help, but no one has come to rescue us. That was some hours ago."

Kieran adds: "At first we were made to stay in the loading bay area at the rear of the ship, which was really dangerous once the ship got out to sea - the ship's loading door is still open at a 45degree angle! They didn't give us any life jackets. And that was when the weather was still calm. The weather is rough now - you can just imagine..."

Kieran further adds: "Initially we were stopped from moving around the ship and had to stay in the bottom of the lower deck. Eventually we just walked through to the crew quarters, and they've let us occupy their small smoking room. At least we are safe and in the dry, and it has a couch so we can try to sleep. We've been given one meal, of sorts, since the ship left Derna. We've got access to water, but it's not drinking water."

Ken O'Keefe has tried to talk to the Captain on a number of occasions. At first he succeeded in talking to him, but since then the captain has blanked him.

The 10 convoyers still do not know where the boat is headed. They asked Ellie to describe to them where the ship appeared on an internet "ship tracking" website. She described they were about 25 miles off the western tip of Crete, heading due north further into Greek territorial waters. The guess is that the berthing port chosen by the captain will be a small, regional port west of Athens on mainland Greece, several hours sail away.

Ellie says: "The relief being able to talk to them was huge: to know they are physically safe and unharmed. However, we remain extremely worried about their overall safety - rough seas, and a bow door open at 45degree angle? It's criminal the captain is sailing in rough weather with an unsecured vessel. Really shocking. I am also disappointed to hear the ship owner and his assistant are armed, and refuse to give the convoyers freedom of movement around the ship. The aid workers are genuine hostages. It is still deeply worrying."

....So i need to write six random things about myself.
I have been putting this off for a few days now...but what the heck..here goes...

1. I am a finder.
Family members and some friends would tell you that I find things...
I love to find things actually... I love looking for arrowheads, four leaf clovers, heart shaped and otherly shaped rocks, that are interesting, Shells, birds, mushrooms...Where ever I am I just like to look and pick out the unusual...the thing that doesn't seem to belong, but is there. Kinda like wheres waldo.
Needless to say I am kinda like Lucy in the Long, Long trailer...Sometimes I have too many rocks...and cool stuff that I have collected.....good thing I have family members that love the stuff I find...
I also am good at finding birds...
We were in Arizona, Patagonia state park waiting for a group to congregate for a bird walk...people were mulling about, doing some birding while waiting...I spied a Rose throated Becard at one of the RV.s campsites. That was the highlight of the birdie morning... Ok so that could happen to anyone...I suppose...but maybe now you might want to take me bird watching with you...tee hee...
But be warned, I did find a great wooden tree trunk Owl...I had the group leader and a few others STUMPED..for a while anyway...tee hee...

2. I Pick Mushrooms. Yep and eat them too...
and Now my family and some friends trust me and they eat them as well.
When we started Full timing seven years ago...we picked up our Homey in Oregon. We took it to the coast to get used to living in it. (We had no clue about what we were doing...but that is another story...seven years later we are old pros to the lifestyle.)
Anyhoo....while at the coast we noticed several roadside tents with signs .."Mushroom buyers" well I love mushrooms but why were they buying mushrooms..not selling.
Well..... Oregon is a great area for mushrooming in the fall and spring, Commercial pickers go out all day ..pick mushrooms then bring them to the tents and sell their mushrooms. We found it fascinating and decided we needed to learn more...
After many mushroom festivals, mushroom walks and talks.....and Luckily meeting some new Mycological friends we were confident enough to pick certain edible mushrooms.
When in Oregon and other areas...you might find me looking for some of my favorites, Boletus edulus, or Porchini, the chanterelle, hedgehog, Oyster, Lobster, Chicken of the woods, Cauliflower.. I could go on and on..love to pick mushrooms. I do dry and freeze them for future use and to give away.

3. I wear ONLY brown and biege....Yep....only brown and beige.
I might have other colors in a brown or beige shirt... I might have a shirt that has allot of another color...but it always has some brown or beige in it.
And why? do you ask..... Well having a very small closet,(rv closets are tiny)... and a very casual lifestyle, and because I look good in brown,( I think so anyway)......I decided that that is what I would do...
I don't need to think about what goes with what...Everything goes together....Life is easy...Shopping is easy...Just look for brown or beige..walk by everything else...

4. I have a lovely Daughter that I did not give birth to.
This is my second marriage and also my husbands. I never had children, unless you count my fur boys. When Jeff and I started dating, Samarrah was around 7 ....she asked to move in with us when we married....she was around eleven then. So I did my best to be a mother with not much knowledge and training..and I made lots of mistakes.... It wasn't always easy....but we both survived and I love her dearly. She is 30 now and living on her own Brooklyn, NY...and almost done with her Masters in Social work...

5. I come from a family of six.
That's just us kids..we do have two parents....
Two older sisters, Two younger sisters...and a baby brother...ha...hes not such a baby boy anymore but when he was born we were all at least older then 8....and he was our baby boy and we were his mothers...all five of us...Oh yea...my mom was his mother too....tee hee...

6. I Love living in our Motor home. HOMEY you can click here to take a tour
Over eight years ago when my husband suggested the idea...I didn't think that I would like it...such a small space....no fireplace..no jacuzzi tub.....but he showed me a few of the beautiful Motor homes and that was that....as far as the fireplace and jacuzzi...well.... we can have an outdoor fire and go to a few hot springs...
Sooo...
We sold our home put stuff in my sisters big attic, (Thanks Lori and Tillio) and the furniture we decided to keep is being used by different family members.
I never looked back...what a blast we are having. We get to spend quality time when we are with Family and friends, sometimes parked in their driveways... We call ourselves migrant workers..Lately we have been raking allot of leaves in NC...you might find us gardening, painting,organizing and helping with computer issues...or sometime making dents in peoples sofas....(JEFF)
When we are traveling we always find beautiful places to stay..if we don't like it ...we leave......
We meet others who travel like us and sometimes hook up and travel together...
Ok its not always Rosy dosy...
Sometimes the motor home seems to be a bit small and I SUGGEST..that my husband golf...tee hee...
and sometimes I am not tooo Happy about being in TRAFFIC....or passing big Trucks...or going on curvey roads...or when my husband drives to fast or when....tee hee..you get the picture...

(no I don't drive the motor home...I do know how and am Licenced to drive it..)
and sometimes the motor home needs fixin...that means pack up the car...take the cat and out of the Homey till its fixed.
but otherwise, I love it...and will continue living this lifestyle until we are ready for a fixed foundation.

Help..cant see my blog in firefox and do I have to many slide shows??

Howdy all,

I went on my blog this am and could not see in with firefox...I can see it in explorer, Jeff can see it using his computer and firefox...but i could not..

I was able to see others blogs with my firefox...but not my own...

any ideas out there?????

I try to load the page and firefox and it says done at the bottom...but nothing but white loads up on the page....HELP

I am using internet explorer to edit my blog....well at least I can see it and edit it in explorer.

anyway...am now sitting at a coffee shop, waiting for lena to finish her therapy appt.

OK...Do I have too many slide shows?? I have just been playing around with them...do they make the page load to slowly.. which ones do you like?

Bird Cam Day #3

Today, I added a suet feeder to the mix, but it doesn't look like any birds gave it a try. A few more cardinals have been frequenting the feeder. Megan and I will be traveling tomorrow to northeast Ohio to be with my parents and brother for Christmas. On Friday, we'll be flying to New Hampshire and then driving to Maine to ring in the new year. Happy Holidays.

An animal rights group rescues twenty-eight bears in China.
An NGO dedicated to ending animal cruelty in Asia have just released footage of 28 moon bears that were being rescued from a life of torture on bile farms in China.
STORY:
The animal rights group, Animals Asia Foundation (AAF), say the bears were rescued from a farm in Ziyang, in Sichuan Province. Then they were brought to a rescue center in Chengdu in cramped cages and in shocking condition. Five were already dead.
The rights group's founder says the surviving bears were emaciated and wounded in various ways and appeared terrified. Some of the bears were blind... some had shattered teeth and were severely wounded.
[Dr. Heather Bacon, AAF Senior Veterinary Nurse]:
"We're a little bit worried about the bear here just in front of us. She's basically been lying down in the same position even whilst we've been moving around and off-loading other bears in front of her. She's making a very long groaning noise and she just seems very disinterested in anything that's going on."
Bear bile is used in traditional Chinese medicine and the black market trade is thriving. It is believed that more than 7,000 bears are imprisoned in the farms across China. For those of you who regularly visit the "blog", you know that most of my posts detail some animal or plant I have observed in the field. The local media does cover natural history from time to time, and I thought that I could start highlighting various stories about nature that appear in Ohio's newspapers. The Akron Beacon Journal recently published such an article about Ohio's prairie past. It is a good read. The article can be accessed here: High praise for prairies

Ohio had several grassland areas called prairies when the first settlers reached this state. A very few of these areas still exist today. In addition, Ohio also is the home to prairie-like habitats called wet meadows dominated by sedges rather than grasses, which make up prairies. There are several informative interviews that detail the people behind the management of a state nature preserve.

Howdee all.

Its been cold....I guess most of the east coast is involved in this cold front...you in Ct. and Boston are getting some real cold temps so I shouldn't complain too much...but Burrrrrrrrrrrr...

Today after a nice lunch at the Pik n Pig BBQ...we worked off some calories by raking leaves and a gazillion hickory nuts that are all over the ground here. Anyone have any ideas of what we can do with all these nuts? I am thinking of hiring some squirrels. Too many nuts...I did find some recipes online for Hickory nuts believe it or not...might try a few.

John Howard, an excellent naturalist who lives in Adams County, was telling me about the fish that live in Scioto Brush Creek. Where we first entered the stream, it was rocky and shallow. Several hundred feet downstream, however, the stream deepened and widened into a gigantic pool. In this pool, we spotted perhaps the coolest fish I have ever seen in Ohio, a Longnose Gar, Lepisosteus osseus. Here you can see the gar looking like pencil in the river. I then zoomed in on the fish to give a closer view. I just never realized we had these fish in Ohio. I haven't seen any in the Olentangy, and I doubt they are here in Columbus, but in Scioto Brush Creek, they are readily seen as they like to float at the surface.

This evening I was going over some pictures of the last few days, and thought this one from our patio party a few weekends ago was particularly nice. Isn't fire relaxing? We humans must have something programmed into us, as fire inspires some type of reaction in most people. Today we went to the Gem show, well we only went to a few tents of gems.
The Gem show is huge....all over Tucson, tents tents and more tents of gems, rocks, sculpture, jewlery etc....
Lena wants to make a few necklaces and it will also be good therapy for her right hand.
It was great fun looking at all the gems.
The show goes on for most of the month so we plan on going back several times.
So far I havent purchased anything.
Lena found most of the gems for her necklaces.

Arrived in Orlando Friday morning.....had our Satellite worked on......but looks like our problem is not the satellite but the direct TV receiver or card.

We met up with Angie and Jimmy...who have been staying at Disney since December.
They stay at Fort Wilderness RV park...right in Disney. Its a beautiful RV park and they are a boat ride or bus ride away from most attractions.

Thanks Jimmy for loaning me your raincoat...I didn't need the toilet tissue or the space blanket you had in the pocket...thank goodness.

Today we arrived in Lake Worth where we will be for two weeks, visiting friends and my aunt and uncle.

Its Hot here...Hot...88 today...
tomorrow i will rearrange my clothing storage so that my summer clothes are front and center.

HEALTH authorities want the power to detain people for up to three months if they refuse testing or treatment for infectious diseases.

Under draft legislation proposed by the State Government, someone with swine flu, measles or meningococcal disease could be forcibly held, examined and treated.

It is one of several wide-ranging powers sought to protect the public.

The Public Health Bill also would, for the first time, give authorities the power to override parents who refused treatment for their children with infectious conditions.

Other diseases that could be controlled include AIDS, polio, rabies, salmonella and cholera.

The tougher enforcement powers would come with a substantial increase in fines - up from $60,000 to $1 million and 10 years' jail - and relate to any serious risk caused to public health. SA Health public health director Kevin Buckett said the new legislation would give authorities wider powers to act more quickly.

"There's nowhere on Earth that is more than 36 hours from anywhere else and where people go, bugs can go," he said yesterday.

"We have to have legislation that can respond in that sort of time.

"The idea would be that we get them out of circulation, where they can't infect other people." Dr Buckett said there were many reasons people refused treatment, including mental health issues, language barriers and even malicious behaviour.

Non-communicable diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, could also be declared, allowing the Government to introduce codes of practice for certain industries or the community. Opposition health spokesman Duncan McFetridge said he supported powers to protect the public from infectious diseases but feared parts of the Bill - to be debated next year - would allow the Government to control people with chronic conditions.

"It's bordering on nanny-state legislation," he said. "It's understandable but how far do we go?"

Australian Medical Associat- ion state president Andrew Lavender said he welcomed most of the changes. as important to protect the public.

Title: the interview for outrages north port fl code enforcement fines

To whom it may concern,

We, Andrew and nida Sheets, have been interested in purchasing a home. This is our history about the 8273 Aero Avenue, North Port, Florida house.
When we first saw the foreclosed house, we knew it needed a lot of work. We were willing to do it because the price was affordable for us. We called Bill Howell, the listing agent for Hook and Ladder Realty. We looked at the house and placed a bid for the house on March 23, 2010 for 11,400 dollars. Bill said it would close in a couple of weeks. With that timeline, we went out and bought most of the furniture and appliances that were needed, and we stored them at my parents house where we are staying. So there is stuff everywhere, outside and inside, and some outside items are starting to rust.
Unfortunately, our purchasing of these items was many weeks ago. Bill said it would take longer because they found a lien on the property and not to worry because they will get it cleaned up. We signed for a time extension. After two weeks went by, and Bill said it still wasn't settled yet on the lien.
Then I decided to investigate the matter myself. I found out the house had a lien on it from the city for over $16,000. I was shocked, and even more shocked for the cause. The lien was because the house number wasn't on the house. (However the house number was on the mail box in front of the house.) The code violation (lien) was 25 dollars a day which had accumulated for two years even though that code had been remove from the city code violations. I had heard that North Port had some issues with exorbitant fees, and now I am right in the middle of it.
I called Bill to ask if they were going to be able to work this out, and he said yes. We waited again with no results. I contacted the city again, and they said they had come to an agreement of 50% of the fine ($8000), but the Title Company or Bill hadn't asked for the Letter of Reprieve. So they sent the check back to Fannie Mae. Now we had to wait another two weeks for city council to meet to hopefully get it resolved. As a result, I signed an extension again. It puzzles me as to why a city government would accumulate fines against a federal housing program which ultimately costs the taxpayers. Why would you not record the violation(s) on a foreclosed property and then when the property sells give the buyer time to make the necessary repairs, rather then accumulating such enormous amounts which make the sale of the properties improbable. North Port is a nice city but with this problem buyers will not purchase here.
I contacted the local newspaper to see if they were aware of these exorbitant fines. They informed me that over a thousand people are presently being fined in North Port.
Because we don't know what will happen to us if we get the house, my wife and I have asked to be released from the contract. There are so many repairs to be made on the house, and the new city codes and permits make purchasing a home like this a scary adventure.
My financial backers have pulled the money off the table for the house, because of the mishandling of the case and for the fear of new fines from the City of North Port
My wife and I have asked to be released from the contract and will not be continuing with the purchase.

Smokey and I did get out of the house today. I dropped him off at the groomer for his Christmas bath while I went to my meeting. Love On A Leash gives him a good bath leaving him clean and doggy odor free, plus they send him home with his very own personalized annual Christmas tree ornament, I need to line them all up for a picture. He has quite a collection of them by now.

This picture gives you a brief sense of how busy it sometimes gets on the streets of my neighborhood during the middle of the day.

Directly across from the the architectural monstrosity called Trump Tower is the busy NYC location of Abercrombie & Fitch. The worst thing about it, aside from the idiotic line to get in, is that they pump tons of A&F scent into the street and it smells awful. If you are allergic to bad cologne and find yourself in Midtown, steer clear of this corner. You can see Tiffany's and Louis Vuitton in the background. Gucci is across the street too. It's a busy retail location.

I have no idea who the gentleman is who happened to be standing there right at the precise moment I took the photo, but I must have seen his blue jacket and I decided to capture his stoic countenance. So good and serious.

Retro Micky D's...UFO Sighting,,,,SNOW in Florida?

Howdee all,

Yep it was cold here in Florida's Panhandle yesterday.....Burrr....
We decided we would do a drive and check out the Birdie hotspots west of Destin all the way to Alabama. We brought our Down coats, scarves, gloves and headed out.

Jeffy wanted his Micky D Mocha coffee delight ....so we found this very new Retro style McDonald's...this is the new design. We were told this is the original look way back when.
It was actually very cool.

It has a very nice open floor plan...nice tile...display cases for all the Micky D paraphernalia from the past.

Several big screen TVS..closed captioned...Free Wifi...Free coffee refills...
and many terminals like the one below for Internet and games...
Great for the kiddies...Young and old...Just bring some disinfectant...lots of finger prints..

So...Tanked up on Coffee we had a nice 100 mile plus drive...stopping off at hotspots...brrrr...too cold...in the car again quickly...We did several walks in the woods...a bit warmer and some nice birds.

Driving from the mainland to a long spit of beach and buildings...

E. T. has landed....and he is alive and well in this home...

Thanksgiving Day

In 1966 I was married on Thanksgiving Day and we celebrated our anniversary on Thanksgiving regardless of the date. Over 25 years we had 4 children and a lot of good times. Regretably my social drinking became rather unsociable and we finally parted company.
While this was difficult it motivated me to join AA and get sober. Now I find myself married to a nice lady who only knows me sober. I got to start over. We love each other and are very happy in our little house.
I have a lot to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving day.

Howdy all,

been hanging out with the ma ther and the pa ther ...ordered down comforter and pillows today from Macys.....ours has lost many feathers and has a hole...and is many years old. Also order a few down pillows..cause I have been meaning to replace my old flat ones for a while......and saw on TV many months back that you should replace pillows every six months to two years....well i think six months silly........and two years seems silly to me too....but considering mine were over ten years maybe fifteen or twenty....ha...i decided it was time to replace them.....

So I have a question for you......How long do you keep your pillows?????
Do you wait till the drool has them all stained....or till the feathers all fall out?

So we try to play some games in real life with an first person shooter or some information about an game from 2038. We had like 8 videos of Ballie Kings and no much views. Ashtabula County Wildflowers

On Thursday, I met up with a group of highly skilled naturalists affiliated with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The site of interest for the day was in the east-central portion of the county, only 5 or so miles from Ohio's eastern border with Pennsylvania. I saw and photographed several wildflowers there that are common in this part of the state, but are more rare in central Ohio.

First up we have dwarf ginseng, Panax trifolius. Here, you can see its head of star-shaped flowers. This plant is related to American ginseng, the larger and commercially valuable forest dwelling species whose roots fetch hundreds of dollars per pound. This species seems to thrive in Ohio's snowbelt region, and I saw hundreds of plants on Thursday.

Next, we have Trillium erectum. This trillium, so named because of its three distinct petals, sepals and leaves, is one of Ohio's most handsome species. It has many different common names, including Wakerobin and stinking Benjamin. A few of us smelled the flower, and we agreed that the scent was "citrusy" rather than offensive. This is my favorite trillium species simply because of its large, red blooms. This plant can be tricky however, and some individuals lack the deep red color. I have seen individual plants with cream colored or almost sea green flower petals.

Onto the third species of the day, Claytonia caroliniana, or Carolina spring beauty. This plant is related to the much more common Virginia spring beauty, one of Ohio's most common wildflowers. It is also in the same genus as the lance-leaved spring beauty, which you may remember from my trip to Colorado. Look to the leaves to distinguish Ohio's two species. Virginia spring beauty has long narrow leaves, while Carolina spring beauty has wide ovate-lanceolate leaves, one of which can be seen in the background of this picture.

Finally, Viola hastata or halberdleaf yellow violet. This species is named for its halberd shaped leaves, which are often dark green and variegated with even darker green lines. I was surprised to see about yellow violets back when I was beginning to look at wildflowers in Ohio. This is definitely a handsome violet. Note the very dark purple lines, which presumably guide insects to nectar and pollen.

Help Me I am with a crazed Driver......

Ok...two days have gone by ...we had 2100 miles to drive to Tucson
the first day the crazed driver drove 510 miles ....the second day he woke up at three thirty and decided he was ready to go...ughhh....and drove another 600 miles...HELP....

Last night I said I had things to do before we left in the morning...So we didn't leave till after 8am thank goodness. I cant help but get grumpy....It is too long for me.... I cant stand it...I would prefer around 300 miles to 400 a day max. ..stop early and go for a nice walk, then make dinner and relax.
But with the crazed driver...we just go go till i get madder than a hatter......You would think he would learn by know not to get me mad.....ha ha....I guess he doesn't care....he would rather drive and drive....I think he needs a new job..... Truck driver.....
"I think today will be a shorter drive day"....says the cRazed driver..

We will see....as of this moment we have 782 miles to go....
I try to keep busy on the computer or watching a show on tv...doing some reading...but its not the same as being parked doing these things...its draining i tell you....draining...DRAINING
help i am being drained.....somebody find the stopper...i am going going....nuts..

EDIT 4: Before I get another DMCA filed against me, I'd like to say I have put this online as I belive this can be counted as fair use, as it criticises Warner Bros. Remastered DVD version. I really hope someone at Warner sees this, and by the time the Blu-ray reissue is released, the audio problems that were encountered on the DVD release have been resolved!

EDIT 3: Ok, it was recorded on Friday 6th May 1988 (Thankyou TELETEXT! or back in the day, ORACLE!!)

EDIT 2: Looking at some of the adverts, it can't have been the 1982 recording, so the next record I have for channel 4 ever showing the film was in 08/1994 (MM/YYYY) So the quality is still pretty good despite its age! Can anyone confirm this date?

EDIT: I think this was recorded off Channel 4 on 05/11/1982 DD/MM/YYYY --- Not bad for a 25 year old VHS recording now is it?

I have seen what looks like a remastered version on youtube, but the backing singers seem weird, I think only one of them is coming through and is too loud! This version has both backing singers and sounds pretty descent! :-)

This particular copy of Woodstock was recorded from Channel 4 (UK) in the late 80's (if anyone has an exact date, that would be nice) just a few years before I was born! The quality is excellent!

While Megan and I were in Northeast Ohio then Maine over the Holiday Season, the birdcam kept watch on the feeding area in our backyard. The camera recorded an image every two minutes, and I merged these images into a nice little movie that sums up the events from December 22nd to this evening. During that time, we did come home, and I added more seed, added an additional feeder close to the window, spread sunflower seeds on the window sill (look for the cardinal closeups-they are quick though!), and finally, I adjusted the camera a bit. All in all, pretty exciting. It is amazing how many birds the camera captures. On this unseasonably warm afternoon, Megan and I trekked out to Glacier Ridge Metropark, near Dublin, Ohio, in northwestern Franklin County. The first time I heard about this park was from John Watts, Natural Resources Manager for the Columbus and Franklin County Metroparks system. I was just a student then in Oxford, and he came to our agriculture and ecology seminar class to tell of a wetland restoration project at one of his areas. This was Glacier Ridge. We arrived there today about 1:00 p.m., and it was very warm, at least 65. The park sits up high. The setting is former agricultural fields. Flat agricultural fields, surrounded by huge houses. We pulled into the driveway and noticed the gargantuan steel and wood observation tower, probably at least 2 stories high. Cool. It stood out like a beacon. The wetlands created had some open water areas, and these areas were surrounded by narrow leaved cattail. Not exactly the most diverse place, but these wetlands have only been around for 5 years or so. Right away I noticed something very cool. Some type of Meadowhawk dragonfly. These guys are fairly common even in the most disturbed wetlands, but seeing them 4 days before the start of December was very cool. Altogether we saw two individuals flying about the parking lot, landing on the asphalt walking path and the wooden benches, trying to warm up in the low, afternoon sun. I thought to myself, what other cool stuff would we see?

As we walked to the large restroom/deck area, I peered over the railing, across the 20 feet of water, to the line of cattails. On several cattails sat perched bullfrogs. I counted 4, Megan saw a fifth. Pretty cool to find these guys so late in the year, but since we have had almost a full week of warm temperatures combined with sunny skies, I suppose this was not all that surprising. We saw about 20-30 mallards fly overhead, a few decided to drop down and into a distant, shallow wetland. A biker on the trail noticed my binoculars, and asked us if we were birders as he pedaled by with his kids. After saying yes, he told me about some shots of a hawk he had taken, I will presume a red-tailed hawk, about 30 minutes earlier. It was eating the remains of a furry rabbit, I presume an eastern cottontail. Pretty cool. I've never seen a hawk eating anything, let alone a rabbit!

Megan and I headed back to the car. We saw three American Coots diving in the open water of the cattail wetland. Not a bad little walk.

I've talked about Kenny Park before. It is a small strip of land on both sides of the Olentany River about a half a mile west High Street, behind the old Burlington Coat Factory at Graceland Shopping Center. This evening was particully warm, clear, and wet underfoot. We've had several days of rain and the Olentangy was just under bankfull. Megan walked around the river and floodplain for about 30 minutes, and we saw the following:

Several gray squirrels hopping about, looking for the perfect hiding place for black walnuts.

Several American robins, high up in the now leafless black walnut tree.

Both male and female cardinals, in their typical habitat, low brushy and weedy vegetation. This evening, I watched a female feasting on the seeds of Polygonum scandens or Polygonum convolvulus through my black ruberized bushnell binoculars.

Megan spotted a downy woodpecker in the top branches of a box-elder. This particular specimen had been mutilated by a chainsaw. It had the fortune to take root underneath powerlines, and it will never get much taller than 15 feet.

2 mallard pairs, at the edge of the flooded Olentangy, doing there best to stay in the same place and avoid looking like the little plastic colored duckies at the state fair circling around the giant mountain of stuffed animals.

A deer....a large female doe, walking slowing underneath the bush honeysuckle canopy. It saw us, stopped a bit, ate some grass, and moved on. My neighbor Jackie tells me that she often sees deer in her front yard and in our road. Again, her Husband Marvin spreads seeds in the street everday attracting all kinds of fun urban wildlife.

Finally...we heard a faint whistle...Oh Sam peabody peabody...Oh Sam peabody peapody peabody...Over and over again. I offered a ten dollar award for the first to spot the small sparrow that was timidly calling out to us with this classic tune. Megan said that the bet was not at all fair since I was the only one with the binoculars. But after some careful listenting. She found it. A white throated sparrow. A little ragged and definitely lonely, it was cool to see this bird had chosen to stop at Kenny Park as he passes southward.

Cardinal Mugshot from the Backyard Bird Cam

Umm. Doesn't that sunflower seed look good? I have actually tried one. They aren't bad, believe it or not. With the recent cold snap, activity at the backyard bird cam has really ramped up. This morning Megan and I watched as no less than eight cardinals positioned themselves in our box-elder, figuring out who would go next to get at our seed-covered windowsill.

So am I completely crazy or has anyone else popped a black oil sunflower seed?

Johnson Woods State Nature Preserve

Today I visited Johnson Woods State Nature Preserve in Wayne County. Here grows one of the largest concentrations of the largest trees in all of Ohio. I don't have a ton of time this evening, but I did wanted to share some photos of this nature preserve. The one thing that struck me today was all of the different types of fungi growing throughout the preserve. I don't know fungi very well, but they are really interesting, and I need to start learning about these interesting organisms.

Here is one of the large white oaks at Johnson Woods. My yellow notebook is about four inches wide, and this tree continues to go straight up for what seemed like forever. I measured the diameter of this tree at 117 centimeters, which is almost four feet. What a tree.

Next up, I saw a few outbreaks of the beech aphid. These aphids like to eat the leaves of beech trees, and form large colonies that look like masses of white wool clinging to the the branches. When disturbed the individual aphids wave back and forth and they look like one super organism. A weird sight indeed.

Another interesting creature was this salt and pepper colored slug. I have no idea what species it is, but I saw two of them on a fallen log. They were each about two inches long.

And now its time for the mushrooms and fungus. Since Johnson Woods is an old growth forest, there is plenty of what scientists call "coarse woody debris" on the floor of the forest, and much of it is inhabited by fungi. I don't know what these species are, but feel free to chime in if you recognize something familiar.

Well....we had a nice one and a half week visit to Connecticut. I went to a Kenny Rogers Christmas concert with mom.....and did allot of shopping and preparing for Christmas Day.
Christmas was fun and crazy as usual...it was great to be with the family.
Jeff and I are now in North Carolina. We will spend New Years with some friends in Boone, NC. then head back to Carthage where we will stay for a little longer before we head south to Texas for most of the winter.
Below are some pics and two videos of our crazy Christmas day....these are long and probably will only be of interest to the family...but you are all welcome to watch.

True Colors Tour....wii fit injury....

Last night Jeff and I had free tickets....to the True Colors Tour....with the below artists...

The goal of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) equality is at the heart of True Colors. From day one, the tour has sought to raise awareness about the discrimination the GLBT community still faces and raise significant funds for the organizations that work everyday on their behalf.

I really enjoyed Tegan and Sara and a few of the Cliks songs....the B52s got the house dancing.....Rosie O'Donnell was funny and had some tender moments when talking about her mother...
And Cindi Lauper was full of energy as usual....

I couldn't get up and dance but danced in my chair....Earlier in the day....i was using my wii fit ....and was doing the advanced step aerobics....well i slipped off the step and fell onto the left side of my left foot...I think it was because i have my sofa pulled out into a bed...and I don't have much room for the side to side steps...i was compensating for the lack of room and well...i slipped...
I cant put pressure on my left foot....I went shopping yesterday morning with my mother and hobbled around...but as the day progressed i couldn't walk as well.....
So to get to the concert i used a cane and Jeff borrowed a wheelchair from the casino and wheeled me around...he thought he was a race car driver......i thought i was going to end up on my face if he hit a bump ....luckily no other injury's...
Today we will go to a clinic and have my foot xrayed to see if i broke something....
I guess i wont be doing the wii fit for a while....I will still do the upper body exercise like tennis, bowling and baseball....maybe a little golf.....
oh well..

Eastern Gray Squirrels

Here in Columbus, most of our eastern gray squirrels are actually gray. That wasn't so where I grew up. About half of the squirrels were jet black. This mix of squirrels was always blamed on Kent State University, a rumored epicenter for the melanistic black squirrels in Northeastern Ohio.

In our yard in Columbus, we have an abundance of gray squirrels. It seems at any time of day, I only have to look out one windows to see these furry creatures. The individual pictured below was was perching on our "accent rock" in front of our house. It makes quite a nice squirrel perch.

Scratching an itch......

So since I most often see gray squirrels that are actually gray, I was fairly surprised to see this darker furred animal in the box-elder from which our feeders hang. It isn't the typical melanistic squirrel that I'm used to seeing. A look at its tail reveals some brownish-tan hairs, and even his back hair is not jet black. Still, a unique individual for the yard, and I'll be sure to keep my on the feeder to see if any more melanistic squirrels visit.

I'm curious, does anyone else have black eastern gray squirrels where you live?

Box Canyon Falls and Rockhounding

The forecast for today wasn't so great...rain, so we decided to stay in town and do a few things.
We had breakfast, went to the Coffee shop that has great Organic coffee.

Then took our previous rock findings to the Rock shop and found out that we are Fools...ha we aren't rich...we have Pyrite...

But that's OK...we will find the mother load soon.

We then went to the falls...very nice. After that went out for lunch, did a little drive thru town and then to an old mine site and looked thru the rocks. Found some rocks with small crystals on them.

Cliff jumping Cedar Creek Falls and Black Canyon Falls. Water was flowing very well, but depth was crazy shallow. Black canyon was about 2 feet deep while Cedar Creek was about 6 feet at the deepest. Ochlochonee River State Park, Florida

Howdee all,

Today we went to the last place on the Great FloridaBirding Trail in this part of the panhandle that we havent seen yet.
Ochlockonee River State park
Ochlockonee, which means "yellow waters," is a mix of brackish, tidal surge, and fresh water. Pristine and deep, the river empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

Below is a fishing station. We didn't fish..but there are both freshwater and saltwater fish here.
Tammy...Joe would have had his fishing pole out for sure!

I took this photo for you sista Dell ...this area is much like where you live in North Carolina...sans alligator. Lots of sand no rocks. This rock retaining wall was built out of cement bags.
Humm...how much are cement bags...I want to build something when I get there in April.

Jeff and I hiked on just about every trail in the park. Mostly Pine woods and Oak thickets.
This park is also popular with the birders because of the resident Red-Cockaded woodpecker...
We saw the nests but didn't look very hard for the bird because we have seen lots when we visit my sister in NC.

There were some really beautiful grassy areas. We arrived early afternoon..the temps were in the low 80s, so the birdies weren't very active.
Saw allot of Brown thrashers, cardinals, white-eyed vireos, chickadees, brown-headed nuthatches, yellow throated warblers, and a pair of Eagles flew over our heads talking to each other...or maybe they were talking to us....I like to think so.....very Cool.

I saw many of these sand mounds on the trails. How the heck did the critter make these little balls? Any Ideas? and yes Beachgrl this would be your fifth prize if you come up with the correct answer. Oh you could make the curly grasses your sixth prize...You go sista.. Of course I am also cheering on my other sisters.

Look at this cute little white squirrel. There are several at the park. These squirrels are not albinos. They are a gene mutation of the gray squirrel and are white as snow.

This park also has campsites for those who want to stay longer and wake up to the sounds of the birdies.

Waterfowl

This past weekend Megan and I went to Blendon Woods Metropark on the northeast side of Columbus for a quick look at waterfowl. I think these birds are really interesting, and it is fascinating that plenty birds travel through Ohio each fall and spring and can be readily seen on the larger water bodies across central Ohio.

At Blendon woods, Megan and I noted this group of gadwall, which was a new bird for me.

We also saw, to my novice eye, what looks like a pied-billed grebe. This individual was floating solo on Thoreau Lake.

Columbus has quite a few spots that are known for rafts of migrating waterfowl. If you live in the area, Blendon woods is fantastic since the birds are usually quite close to the observation area and the park has two of those gigantic metal encased spotting scopes for all to use. Hoover reservoir is another hotspot, just up the way from Blendon. To know where to go when, visit the Ohio Birds Listserve for daily bird reports from across Ohio.

I turned 27 since the last post. Kinda crazy? Hmmm.....Well Anyways, that actually sounds pretty old, doesn't it?

The race for Ohio's governor is heating up. It definitely looks like there will be a hard fought battle between two very conservatives, Jim Petro and Ken Blackwell. If Blackwell recieves the republican nod in the primary, look for it to be a very tough battle against democrat Ted Strickland.

Also, mall heiress Capri Cafaro is running again for Sherrod Brown's vacated and convoluted seat in Northeast Ohio. I'm not sure that Brown can beat DeWine, but he would be a good man for the job. Both Mike DeWine and George Voinovich have been relatively independent thinkers in Washington and have refused to jump on board with the mindless conservatism that currently plagues both houses of congress. DeWine's support has weakened because he has been moderate on some issues. Some have interpreted that his seat is vulnerable. However, is this the case against a moderate democrat in Sherrod Brown? I doubt it. I Predict DeWine wins by 5%, Stickland wins by 3% against Jim Petro, and the N.E. Ohio seat is vacated by democrats, since Capri Cafaro is simply looking for someplace to spend her money, and doesn't seem like a realistic candidate.
